Meaning of Highway Code

The Highway Code is a set of rules and instructions that guide people on how to use the road safely.

Meaning of Road Safety

Road safety means using the road in ways that reduce accidents and injuries.

Road Users

Road users are people who use the road. Examples include: 🚶 pedestrians; 🚗 drivers; 🏍️ motorcyclists; 🚲 cyclists; 🚌 passengers.

Rules for Pedestrians

Pedestrians should:

  1. Walk on the pavement or safe side of the road.
  2. Avoid playing on the road.
  3. Cross at safe places.
  4. Look carefully before crossing.
  5. Obey traffic lights and signs.

Crossing the Road Safely

Before crossing: 👀 Look left. 👀 Look right. 👀 Look left again. Cross only when the road is safe. Young children should cross busy roads with a responsible adult.

Importance of the Highway Code

The Highway Code:

  • prevents accidents;
  • promotes order;
  • protects road users;
  • teaches safe road behaviour;
  • helps drivers and pedestrians understand road rules.
