Meaning of an Institution

An institution is an organised body created to perform particular duties.

Meaning of Government Institution

A government institution is an organisation established by government to perform specific public duties.

Reasons Government Institutions Are Established

They are established to:

  • protect citizens;
  • enforce laws;
  • regulate activities;
  • maintain standards;
  • prevent crime;
  • promote public welfare.

Examples of Government Institutions

NAFDAC

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

It regulates certain food, drugs and related products.

SON

Standards Organisation of Nigeria.

It promotes standards and quality of products.

EFCC

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

It investigates and combats economic and financial crimes.

NDLEA

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

It works to control illegal drugs and drug trafficking.

Importance of Government Institutions

They help to:
