E: CONTENT

Meaning of Speed

Speed tells us how fast or slow an object moves.
🚗 🚌 🚲

Distance

Distance is how far an object travels.
It may be measured in:

  • metres (m)
  • kilometres (km)

Time

Time tells us how long a journey takes.
It may be measured in:

  • seconds
  • minutes
  • hours

Formula for Speed

Speed = Distance ÷ Time

Example

A car travels 120 km in 2 hours.
Speed = 120 ÷ 2
\= 60 km/h

Finding Distance

Distance = Speed × Time

Example:
Speed = 50 km/h
Time = 3 hours
Distance = 50 × 3
\= 150 km

Finding Time

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Example:
Distance = 100 km
Speed = 50 km/h
Time = 100 ÷ 50
\= 2 hours

General Revision

Pupils revise:

  • Ratio and percentage.
  • Percentage problems.
  • Open sentences.
  • Profit and loss.
  • Simple interest.
  • Commission and discount.
  • Perimeter and circumference.
  • Area of triangles.
  • Volume.
  • Capacity.
  • Weight.
  • Speed.

F1: Teachers’ Activities

  1. Uses examples of moving vehicles to introduce speed.
  2. Explains distance and time.
  3. Introduces the formula for speed.
  4. Demonstrates speed calculations.
  5. Shows how to find distance and time.
  6. Revises major second-term topics.
  7. Gives pupils revision exercises.

F2: Pupils’ Activities

  1. Explain speed in their own words.
