Revision of Intonation

Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when speaking.

Commands often use falling intonation:

👉 Close the door. ↘️

👉 Sit down. ↘️

Polite requests may use rising intonation:

👉 Could you help me, please? ↗️

👉 May I borrow your ruler? ↗️

Linking Words

Linking words join ideas together.

Examples include:

  • although
  • even though
  • because
  • whereas
  • but
  • so

Examples:

  • Ada stayed at home because she was ill.
  • Tunde is young but strong.
  • Although it was raining, we went to school.
  • Chika likes rice, whereas Bola prefers yam.
  • It was late, so we went home.

Personal Opinion

A personal opinion is what a person thinks or believes about something.

Useful expressions include:

  • I think…
  • I believe…
  • In my opinion…
  • I prefer…

Examples:

In my opinion, school uniforms are important because they make pupils look neat.

I think children should help with simple duties at home.

Short Composition: My Opinion About School Uniforms

I think pupils should wear school uniforms. Uniforms make pupils look neat and equal. They also help people to identify pupils from a particular school. In my opinion, school uniforms are useful.
