Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense shows an action that happened in the past.

Examples:

• Ada washed the plates.
• Tunde played football.
• We visited our grandmother.

Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense shows that one action had finished before another past action happened.

It is formed with:

had + past participle

Examples:

• Ada had eaten before her mother arrived.
• The pupils had finished their work before the bell rang.
• Tunde had left before I came.

Simple Past and Past Perfect

The teacher arrived after the pupils had entered the classroom.

• had entered happened first.
• arrived happened later.

Health Vocabulary

Common health words include:

• doctor
• nurse
• hospital

• sickness
• treatment
• clinic

🏥 A sick person may go to a hospital.

👩‍⚕️ A doctor examines and treats patients.

💊 Medicine may be used to treat sickness.

Giving Directions

Useful expressions include:

• Walk past the school.
• It is beside the bank.
• It is opposite the market.

Example:

To get to the library, go straight, turn left at the school gate and walk past the office. The library is beside the computer room.

Reading Passage

Bisi became ill on Monday. Her mother took her to the clinic. The doctor examined her and gave her some medicine. Bisi had rested for two days before she returned to school.
