Revision of Intonation

Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when speaking.

Statements usually use falling intonation:

Commands usually use falling intonation:

👉 Close the door. ↘️

Yes-or-no questions often use rising intonation:

👉 Are you ready? ↗️

Articles

Articles are words placed before nouns.

The three common articles are:

• the

Using “A”

Use a before a singular word beginning with a consonant sound.

Examples:

• a boy
• a bag
• a teacher
• a car

Using “An”

Use an before a singular word beginning with a vowel sound.

Examples:

• an egg
• an orange
• an umbrella
• an apple

Using “The”

Use the when talking about a particular person, place or thing.

Examples:

• Close the door.
• The sun is hot.
• I saw the teacher.

Letter of Congratulation

A letter of congratulation is written to show happiness about another person’s success.

Example:

10, Market Road,

Lagos.

Congratulations on your excellent result. I am very happy that you came first in your class. Keep working hard.
