Meaning of Separation of Powers

Separation of powers means dividing government responsibilities among the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

Why Government Is Divided

Government is divided into three arms to:

  1. Prevent too much power from being controlled by one person or group.
  2. Promote accountability.
  3. Protect citizens from abuse of power.
  4. Promote fairness.
  5. Make government more effective.
  6. Ensure proper administration of justice.

Checks and Balances

Checks and balances means that each arm of government has ways of checking the actions of the other arms so that no arm becomes too powerful.

Example

The Legislature makes laws. The Executive carries out the laws. The Judiciary interprets the laws. Each arm has its own responsibility.

Importance of Cooperation

Although their duties are different, the three arms must cooperate for government to work properly. 🤝 Cooperation promotes peace, order and development.
