C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils have learnt about families, family members and responsibilities, marriage and marriage practices, as well as modern and traditional medicines and their safe use.

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

E: CONTENT

Revision of Family

A family is a group of people who are related to one another. Two common types are:

  1. Nuclear family.
  2. Extended family.

A nuclear family mainly includes father, mother and children. An extended family may also include grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Revision of Family Responsibilities

Parents provide care, protection, food, shelter and guidance. Children should:

  • Obey parents.
  • Study hard.
  • Respect elders.
  • Help with suitable household duties.

Revision of Marriage

Marriage is a socially and legally recognised union between two adults who agree to live together as partners and build a family. Forms discussed include:

  • Traditional or customary marriage.
  • Christian marriage.
  • Islamic marriage.
  • Civil marriage.

Revision of Marriage Practices

Marriage activities may include:

  • Family introduction.
  • Wearing special clothes.
  • Prayers and blessings.
  • Presentation of customary items.
  • Music and dancing.
  • Exchange of gifts.

Revision of Medicines

A medicine is a substance used to prevent, treat or manage illness. Two broad groups discussed are:

  1. Modern medicines.
  2. Traditional medicines.

Modern medicines may come as: 💊 Tablets 🧴 Syrups 💊 Capsules 🧴 Creams Traditional remedies may sometimes use: 🍃 Leaves 🌱 Roots 🌳 Bark 🍊 Fruits

Medicine Safety

Pupils should remember:

  1. Never take medicine without responsible adult guidance.
  2. Follow instructions from qualified health professionals.
  3. Never drink unknown mixtures.
  4. Keep medicines away from small children.
  5. Tell a responsible adult when feeling sick.
