PRIMARY 2: BASIC SCIENCE – SECOND TERM | WEEK 8

TOPIC: OBJECTS THAT SINK IN WATER

A: TEACHING AND LEARNING
MATERIALS

  1. Bowl of water.
  2. Stone.
  3. Metal spoon.
  4. Coin.
  5. Nail.
  6. Cork.
  7. Leaf.
  8. Observation chart.
  9. Pupils’ writing materials.

B: REFERENCE MATERIALS

  1. Scheme of work.
  2. Recommended Basic Science textbook for Primary 2.
  3. Online educational resources.

C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils have learnt that some objects such as dry wood, cork and
some plastic objects may float on water.

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of sinking.
  2. Identify objects that sink in water.
  3. Mention examples of sinking objects.
  4. Differentiate between floating and sinking.
  5. Carry out a simple sink-or-float activity.
  6. Record simple observations.

E: CONTENT

Meaning of Sinking

An object sinks when it goes down to the bottom of
water. For example: 💧 + 🪨 = a stone sinks.

Objects That Usually Sink

Examples include:

  1. Stone.
  2. Coin.
  3. Metal nail.
  4. Metal spoon.
  5. Some glass objects.

Floating and Sinking

Floating: The object stays on or near the water
surface. Sinking: The object goes to the bottom.
Examples: 🍃 Leaf — may float. 🪨 Stone — sinks.

Simple Experiment

Put the following objects into water one at a time:

  • Stone.
  • Coin.
  • Leaf.
  • Cork.
  • Metal spoon.

Observe whether each object floats or sinks.

Object Observation
Leaf Floats
Cork Floats
Stone Sinks
Coin Sinks
Metal spoon Sinks

Important Note

Whether an object floats or sinks can depend on its material, shape
and whether it contains air.

F: LESSON PRESENTATION

F1: Teachers’ Activities

  1. Revises floating objects.
  2. Introduces the meaning of sinking.
  3. Drops a stone into water.
  4. Tests different objects.
  5. Guides pupils to classify objects into floating and sinking
    groups.
  6. Records the observations on the board.
  7. Reinforces safety rules.

F2: Pupils’ Activities

  1. Observe objects placed in water.
  2. Identify sinking objects.
  3. Compare floating and sinking.
  4. Sort objects into two groups.
  5. Record observations.
  6. Answer oral questions.

G: CONCLUSION

The teacher explains that objects that go to the bottom of water
sink, while objects that remain on or near the surface
float.

H: EVALUATION GUIDE

Pupils should be able to answer the following questions:

  1. What does sinking mean?
  2. Mention three objects that sink in water.
  3. Does a stone float or sink?
  4. Does a cork usually float or sink?
  5. What is the difference between floating and sinking?
  6. Sort these into floating and sinking objects: stone, leaf,
    coin, cork
