TOPIC: ADDITION OF WHOLE NUMBERS WITH SUM LESS THAN 10

C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils have learnt simple addition with answers less than 5 and can use the plus sign (+).

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Add two numbers with answers below 10.
  2. Add using counters and fingers.
  3. Add three small numbers.
  4. Add zero to a number.
  5. Solve simple addition word problems.

E: CONTENT

Addition within 10

Addition means putting numbers together.
Example:
🍎 🍎 🍎 + 🍎 🍎 = 🍎 🍎 🍎 🍎 🍎

3 + 2 = 5

Using Fingers

Show 4 fingers on one hand and 2 fingers on the other.

4 + 2 = 6

Adding Three Numbers

1 + 2 + 3 = 6

● + ●● + ●●● = 6

Adding Zero

Adding zero does not change a number.

4 + 0 = 4

0 + 5 = 5

Simple Word Problem

Ada has 3 oranges. Her mother gives her 2 more.
🍊 🍊 🍊 + 🍊 🍊 = 5 oranges
So:

3 + 2 = 5
