C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils have learnt about road safety and know that they should walk on the footpath, stay away from moving vehicles and avoid playing on the road.

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. State safe ways of crossing the road.
  2. Explain why they should stop before crossing.
  3. Demonstrate how to look left, right and left again.
  4. Identify a pedestrian crossing.
  5. State why children should cross with an adult.
  6. Mention dangers of careless road crossing.

E: CONTENT

Crossing the Road Safely

We must be very careful when crossing the road.
Before crossing, we should:

  1. Stop at the side of the road.
  2. Look left.
  3. Look right.
  4. Look left again.
  5. Listen for moving vehicles.
  6. Cross only when the road is safe.

Look Left, Right and Left Again

👀 Look left.
👀 Look right.
👀 Look left again.
If no vehicle is coming, cross carefully.

Pedestrian Crossing

A pedestrian crossing is a special place where people can cross the road.
It may have white stripes called a zebra crossing.

People should use a pedestrian crossing where one is available.

Crossing with an Adult

👩‍👦 Young children should cross busy roads with a trusted adult.
Hold the adult’s hand and follow instructions.

Unsafe Ways of Crossing

❌ Do not run across the road.
❌ Do not cross between parked vehicles.
❌ Do not play while crossing.
❌ Do not cross without looking.

  2. Explains the correct steps for crossing the road.
  3. Demonstrates looking left, right and left again.
