Meaning of External Influence

External influence refers to ideas, habits or ways of life that come from outside a person’s society or country. Nigerian families may be influenced by people and cultures from other countries.

Examples of External Influence

External influence can affect:

  1. Dressing.
  2. Food.
  3. Language.
  4. Music.
  5. Religion.
  6. Entertainment.
  7. Family relationships.

For example: 👗 Some Nigerians wear foreign styles of clothing. 🍔 Some families eat foreign foods. 📱 Children may learn foreign expressions from television and the internet.

Positive Effects of External Influence

External influence can:

  1. Introduce new technology.
  2. Improve education.
  3. Encourage new skills.
  4. Improve communication.
  5. Introduce useful foods and better methods of preparing food.

Negative Effects of External Influence

External influence may:

  1. Make people neglect Nigerian languages.
  2. Lead to copying bad behaviour.

  5. Make people abandon useful traditions.

Preserving Good Nigerian Family Values

We can preserve good family values by:

  6. Learning useful foreign ideas without abandoning good Nigerian values.
