E: CONTENT

Direct Speech

Direct speech gives the exact words spoken by a person.
Example:
Ada said, “I am hungry.”
Quotation marks are used around the exact words spoken.

Indirect Speech

Indirect speech reports what someone said without using the exact words.
Example:
Direct: Ada said, “I am hungry.”
Indirect: Ada said that she was hungry.
Another example:
Direct: Tunde said, “I will go home.”
Indirect: Tunde said that he would go home.

Conjunctions

A conjunction joins words, phrases or sentences.
Examples:

• and
• but
• because
• or
• so

Sentences:

• Ada and Chika are friends.
• I wanted to play, but it was raining.
• Musa stayed indoors because he was sick.

Tenses

Tenses tell us when an action happens.
Present tense:
I play football.
Past tense:
I played football yesterday.
Future tense:
I will play football tomorrow.
