Meaning of National Unity

National unity means people from different groups in a country living and working together peacefully as one nation. Nigeria has many:

• ethnic groups;
• languages;
• religions;
• cultures.

Despite these differences, all citizens belong to one country — Nigeria.

Unity in Diversity

Unity in diversity means people remaining united even though they have different cultures, languages, religions and traditions. 🇳🇬 Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Tiv, Efik, Ijaw, Edo and many other groups are all Nigerians.

Importance of National Unity

National unity:

1. Promotes peace.
2. Encourages national development.
3. Strengthens the country.
4. Promotes cooperation.
5. Reduces conflict.
6. Encourages mutual respect.

Factors That Promote National Unity

These include:

• tolerance;
• fairness;
• respect;
• cooperation;
• patriotism;
• equal treatment;
• respect for other cultures.

Factors That Threaten National Unity

These include:

• tribalism;
• discrimination;
• religious intolerance;
• injustice;
• hatred;
• violence;
• favouritism.
