TOPIC: REVISION OF PRIMARY 5 BASIC SCIENCE WORK
A: TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIALS
- Charts of living and non-living things.
- Pictures of plants and animals.
- Samples of common materials.
- Simple machine models.
- Energy source pictures.
- Pupils’ writing books and pencils.
B: REFERENCE MATERIALS
- Scheme of work.

- Online educational resources.
C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
The pupils have learnt several Basic Science topics in Primary 5, including living and non-living things, changes in plants and animals, simple machines, forms of energy and environmental pollution.
D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify living and non-living things.
- State some characteristics of living things.
- Mention examples of simple machines.
- Identify common forms of energy.
- Explain environmental pollution.
- Recall important Basic Science concepts learnt in Primary 5.
E: CONTENT
Living and Non-Living Things
Living things are things that have life. Examples:
- Human beings
- Goats
- Birds
- Trees
- Grass
Living things can:
- Move.
- Grow.
- Feed.
- Breathe.
- Reproduce.
- Respond to changes around them.
Non-living things do not have life. Examples:
- Stone
- Chair
- Table
- Bottle
- Book
Changes in Plants and Animals
Living things change as they grow. 🌱 Seed → Seedling → Mature plant 👶 Baby → Child → Adult Plants may increase in height and develop more leaves, flowers and fruits. Animals also increase in size and develop into adults.
Simple Machines
Simple machines help us to do work more easily. Examples include:
- Lever
- Pulley
- Wheel and axle
- Inclined plane
- Screw
- Wedge
A bottle opener is an example of a lever.
Forms of Energy
Energy is the ability to do work. Common forms of energy include:
- Heat energy.
- Light energy.
- Sound energy.
- Electrical energy.
- Chemical energy.
☀️ The sun gives us heat and light energy.
Environmental Pollution
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment. Types include:
- Air pollution
- Water pollution
- Land pollution
- Noise pollution
We can reduce pollution by keeping our environment clean and disposing of waste properly.
F: LESSON PRESENTATION
F1: Teachers’ Activities
- Revises living and non-living things with the pupils.
- Displays pictures of plants, animals and objects.
- Revises the characteristics of living things.
- Shows pupils examples or pictures of simple machines.
- Discusses common forms of energy.
- Revises environmental pollution.
- Asks oral questions to determine pupils’ previous knowledge.
F2: Pupils’ Activities
- Identify living and non-living things.
- Mention characteristics of living things.
- Name examples of simple machines.
- Mention different forms of energy.
- Explain environmental pollution.
- Answer revision questions.
G: CONCLUSION
The teacher revises important Basic Science concepts learnt in Primary 5 and corrects pupils where necessary. The teacher encourages pupils to apply their previous knowledge while learning new topics in Primary 6.
H: EVALUATION GUIDE
Pupils should be able to answer the following questions:
