The pupils have learnt basic division facts and understand that division involves sharing a quantity into equal groups.

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Divide whole numbers by 10.
  2. Divide whole numbers by multiples of 10.
  3. Divide whole numbers by 100 and 200.
  4. Divide decimals by 10.
  5. Divide decimals by multiples of 10.
  6. Solve simple word problems involving division.

E: CONTENT

Meaning of Division

Division means sharing equally.
The division signs are ÷ and /.
Example:
20 ÷ 4 = 5

Division by 10

Examples:
50 ÷ 10 = 5
350 ÷ 10 = 35
1,200 ÷ 10 = 120

Division by Multiples of 10

Example:
240 ÷ 20 = 12
360 ÷ 30 = 12

Division by 100

Examples:
500 ÷ 100 = 5
2,400 ÷ 100 = 24

Division by 200

Example:
1,000 ÷ 200 = 5

Division of Decimals by 10

When dividing a decimal by 10, the decimal point moves one place to the left.
Examples:
5.0 ÷ 10 = 0.5
25.0 ÷ 10 = 2.5

Word Problem

₦600 is shared equally among 20 pupils.
₦600 ÷ 20 = ₦30
Each pupil gets ₦30.
