E: CONTENT

Meaning of Abbreviation

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or group of words.

Examples:

  • Dr. – Doctor
  • Mr. – Mister
  • Mrs. – Mistress
  • kg – kilogram
  • cm – centimetre
  • Jan. – January

Meaning of Acronym

An acronym is formed from the first letters of a group of words.

Examples:

  • WHO – World Health Organization
  • NTA – Nigerian Television Authority
  • CBN – Central Bank of Nigeria
  • ICT – Information and Communication Technology

Reported Commands

A reported command tells us what someone instructed another person to do.

Direct:

Teacher said, “Open your books.”

Reported:

The teacher told the pupils to open their books.

Direct:

Mother said, “Wash the plates.”

Reported:

Mother told Ada to wash the plates.

Responding to an Invitation

Accepting:

Thank you for inviting me. I will attend.

Declining:

Thank you for inviting me. I am sorry I will not be able to attend.
