Meaning of Civic Education

Civic Education is the study that teaches people their rights, duties, responsibilities and values as members of society. It helps people to become responsible citizens.

Meaning of a Citizen

A citizen is a legal member of a country. For example, a Nigerian citizen is a recognised member of Nigeria.

Meaning of Citizenship

Citizenship means being a recognised member of a country with rights and responsibilities.

Components of Civic Education

Civic Education teaches us about:

  1. Rights.
  2. Duties.
  3. Responsibilities.
  4. Values.
  5. Leadership.
  6. Government.
  7. National unity.
  8. Community participation.

Responsible Citizenship

A responsible citizen:

  • Obeys laws.
  • Respects others.
  • Protects public property.
  • Helps the community.
  • Shows honesty.
  • Promotes peace.
