E: CONTENT

Meaning of State Government

State Government is the level of government responsible for governing a state within Nigeria. The head of the executive arm of a state is the Governor.

Functions of State Government

State Government may:

  1. Provide secondary schools.
  2. Provide hospitals.
  3. Construct and maintain state roads.
  4. Support agriculture.
  5. Maintain law and order with relevant agencies.
  6. Provide water and other public services.
  7. Develop communities.
  8. Make policies for the state within its powers.

Meaning of Cooperation

Cooperation means working together to achieve a common goal.

Cooperation Between State and Local Governments

State and Local Governments may work together in areas such as:

  1. Education.
  2. Healthcare.
  3. Road construction.
  4. Sanitation.
  5. Agriculture.
  6. Community development.
  7. Emergency response.
  8. Public enlightenment.

Benefits of Cooperation

Cooperation:

  1. Improves public services.
  2. Reduces duplication of work.
  3. Encourages faster development.
  4. Helps communities solve problems.
  5. Promotes proper use of resources.
  6. Strengthens unity.

Example

A State Government may support a Local Government with funds or equipment to repair roads or improve a health centre.
