E: CONTENT

Meaning of Religion

Religion is the belief in and worship of God or a Supreme Being. Religion also teaches people how to behave towards others.

Major Religions in Nigeria

Three major religions commonly practised in Nigeria are:

1. Christianity.
2. Islam.
3. African Traditional Religion.

Christianity

Followers are called Christians. Common place of worship: ⛪ Church Religious leaders may include:

• Pastor.
• Priest.
• Reverend.

Islam

Followers are called Muslims. Common place of worship: 🕌 Mosque A Muslim religious leader may be called an Imam.

African Traditional Religion

African Traditional Religion includes indigenous forms of worship practised by different communities. Traditional religious leaders may differ from one community to another.

Religious Practices

Religious practices may include:

1. Prayer.
2. Singing.
3. Reading holy books.
4. Giving to the needy.
5. Attending worship.
6. Fasting.
7. Celebrating religious festivals.

Importance of Religion

Religion can:

1. Teach good behaviour.
2. Encourage love.
3. Promote honesty.
4. Encourage helping others.
5. Promote peace.
6. Teach respect.

Religious Tolerance

Religious tolerance means respecting people who practise religions different from ours. We should not insult, fight or discriminate against others because of religion.
