E: CONTENT

Meaning of a Family

A family is a group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption who live together or care for one another. A family is the first social group a child belongs to.

Types of Family

There are two common types of family:

  1. Nuclear family.
  2. Extended family.

Nuclear Family

A nuclear family is made up of:

  • Father.
  • Mother.
  • Children.

Example: 👨 Father 👩 Mother 👧 Daughter 👦 Son

Extended Family

An extended family includes the nuclear family and other relatives such as:

  • Grandfather.
  • Grandmother.
  • Uncle.
  • Aunt.
  • Cousin.
  • Nephew.
  • Niece.

Duties of Family Members

Parents should:

  1. Provide food.
  2. Provide shelter.
  3. Provide clothing.
  4. Pay school fees.
  5. Protect the children.
  6. Teach good behaviour.

Children should:

  1. Obey their parents.
  2. Help with simple house chores.
  3. Respect elders.
  4. Study hard.
  5. Keep the home clean.

Importance of the Family

The family:

  1. Provides love and care.
  2. Provides food and shelter.
  3. Teaches good behaviour.
  4. Protects its members.
  5. Provides education.
  6. Gives members a sense of belonging.

Ways of Maintaining a Happy Family

Family members should:

  • Love one another.
  • Respect one another.
  • Help one another.
  • Forgive one another.
  • Communicate peacefully.
  • Be honest.
  • Share responsibilities.
