Vowel Sounds

Listen to the difference:

/ʌ/ as in:

  • cup
  • sun
  • bus
  • cut

/ɜː/ as in:

  • bird
  • girl
  • nurse
  • shirt

The teacher pronounces the words while pupils repeat.

Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing tells us what a person, place or thing is like.

We may describe:

  • size
  • colour
  • shape
  • appearance
  • activities

Linking Words

Linking words join ideas together.

Examples:

  • and
  • but
  • because
  • then

Sentences:

  • I saw a doctor and a nurse.
  • I was tired, but I was happy.
  • I went home because it was late.

Reading Passage: A Visit to the Hospital

Yesterday, I went to the hospital with my mother. The hospital was large and clean. I saw doctors, nurses and patients. The nurses wore neat uniforms. Everyone was busy helping the sick people.

New Words

  • patient – a sick person receiving treatment.
  • uniform – special clothes worn for work or school.
  • treatment – medical care given to a sick person.
  • clean – free from dirt.
