C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils have revised simple sentences, nouns, pronouns, verbs and simple present and past tenses.

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Explain possibility in simple terms.
  2. Use can to express ability or possibility.
  3. Use may to ask for permission.
  4. Respond correctly to requests for permission.
  5. Read and answer questions from a short passage.
  6. Write simple sentences using can and may.

E: CONTENT

Meaning of Possibility

Possibility means that something can happen.

Examples:

  • It can rain today.
  • Ngozi can come to school tomorrow.
  • We can win the match.

Expressing Ability with “Can”

We use can to show that someone is able to do something.

Examples:

🏃 Tunde can run fast.

🏊 Amina can swim.

📖 I can read English.

Asking for Permission with “May”

We use may when asking politely for permission.

Examples:

  • May I come in?
  • May I drink some water?
  • May I use your pencil?

Possible answers are:

  • Yes, you may.
  • No, you may not.

Simple Reading Passage

Bola is a good pupil. She can read very well. One day, she forgot her pencil at home. She asked her friend, “May I use your pencil?” Her friend gave her a pencil.

Questions:

  1. Who is a good pupil?
  2. What can Bola do?
  3. What did Bola forget?
  4. What did she ask her friend?

Composition: My Last Holiday

Pupils can write simple sentences such as:

During my last holiday, I visited my grandmother. I played with my cousins. We went to the market. I enjoyed my holiday.

F: LESSON PRESENTATION

F1: Teachers’ Activities

  1. Explains the meaning of possibility and permission.
  2. Demonstrates the use of can and may.
  3. Gives examples on the board.
  4. Allows pupils to practise asking for permission.
  5. Reads the passage with the pupils.
