Meaning of Ethnicity
Ethnicity refers to strong identification with a particular ethnic group. An ethnic group is a group of people who share common features such as:
- language
- culture
- history
- customs
- traditions
Examples of Nigerian Ethnic Groups
Examples include:
- Hausa
- Igbo
- Yoruba
- Fulani
- Tiv
- Efik
- Ibibio
- Ijaw
- Edo
Nigeria has many other ethnic groups.
When Ethnicity Becomes a Problem
Ethnic identity itself is not bad. It becomes a problem when people treat members of their own ethnic group better and discriminate against others.
Causes of Unhealthy Ethnicity
Some causes include:
- Tribal prejudice.
- Favouritism.
- Unequal sharing of resources.
- Competition for jobs or positions.
- Lack of tolerance.
- Political disagreements.
- Lack of understanding among groups.
Tribal Discrimination
Tribal discrimination means treating someone unfairly because of his or her ethnic group. This should be avoided because all citizens deserve fair treatment.
