Meaning of Farm Produce Preservation

Farm produce preservation is the process of keeping farm produce in good condition for a longer period.

Reasons for Preservation

Farm produce is preserved to:

  1. Prevent spoilage.
  2. Reduce waste.
  3. Make food available for a longer time.
  4. Maintain quality.
  5. Make produce available when it is out of season.

Sun-Drying

Sun-drying means removing water from farm produce by exposing it to sunlight. Examples include:

  • maize
  • pepper
  • cassava chips
  • vegetables

Smoking

Smoking involves exposing food to smoke and heat. Examples include:

  • fish
  • meat

Frying

Frying involves cooking farm produce in hot oil. Examples include:

Freezing means keeping food at a very low temperature. Examples include:
