E: CONTENT

Meaning of Addition

Addition means putting two or more numbers together to find the total.
The sign for addition is +.
Example:

3 + 2 = 5

Addition Without Renaming

We add numbers according to their place values.
Example:

First:
3 + 4 = 7
Then:
2 + 1 = 3
Therefore:

23 + 14 = 37

Addition of Three-Digit Numbers

Example:
243

368

  • Units: 3 + 5 = 8
  • Tens: 4 + 2 = 6
  • Hundreds: 2 + 1 = 3

Therefore:

243 + 125 = 368

Word Problem

Ada has 24 oranges. Her mother gives her 15 more oranges.
How many oranges does she have altogether?

24 + 15 = 39

Ada has 39 oranges.
