E: CONTENT
Meaning of Auxiliary Verbs
An auxiliary verb is a helping verb.
It helps the main verb in a sentence.
Examples include:
- am
- is
- are
- was
- were
- has
- have
- can
- may
- will
Use of “Am, Is and Are”
We use them for actions happening now.
Examples:
- I am reading.
- Ada is singing.
- The boys are playing.
Use of “Was and Were”
We use them for actions that happened in the past.
Examples:
- Tunde was sleeping.
- Ada was cooking.
- The children were playing.
Use of “Has and Have”
Examples:
- She has a book.
- Tunde has a bicycle.
- I have a pencil.
- We have two bags.
Use of “Can”
Can shows ability.
Examples:
- I can read.
- Birds can fly.
- Musa can swim.
Use of “May”
May can be used to ask for permission.
Examples:
- May I come in?
- May I drink some water?
Use of “Will”
Will tells us about a future action.
Examples:
- I will go to school tomorrow.
- Ada will visit her grandmother.
