Main Parts of a Plant

A typical plant has different parts. These include:

  1. Roots.
  2. Stem.
  3. Leaves.
  4. Flowers.
  5. Fruits.
  6. Seeds.

Roots

Roots are usually found below the soil. Functions of roots include:

  1. Holding the plant firmly in the soil.
  2. Taking in water and minerals from the soil.
  3. Storing food in some plants.

Examples of roots that store food include cassava and carrot.

Stem

The stem supports the plant. It:

  1. Holds leaves, flowers and fruits.
  2. Carries water from the roots to other parts.
  3. Carries food around the plant.

Leaves

Leaves are usually green. They help plants to:

  1. Make food.
  2. Exchange gases.
  3. Lose excess water.

Flowers

Flowers help many plants to reproduce. Flowers may later develop into fruits.

Fruits and Seeds

Fruits protect seeds. Seeds can grow into new plants when conditions are suitable.
