C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils can compare objects and identify things that are long, short, big or small.

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Explain length in simple terms.
  2. Identify long and short objects.
  3. Measure objects using simple natural units.
  4. Identify centimetres and metres.
  5. Use a ruler to measure short objects.

E: CONTENT

Meaning of Length

Length tells us how long or short an object is.
Examples:
✏️ A pencil may be short.
📏 A ruler may be longer than a pencil.

Comparing Length

We can say:

  • The rope is longer than the pencil.
  • The pencil is shorter than the ruler.

Natural Units of Measurement

We can measure using:

  • hand spans ✋
  • footsteps 👣

Example:
A table may be 5 hand spans long.

Standard Units

We also use:

  • centimetre (cm)
  • metre (m)

A ruler is used to measure short objects in centimetres.
A metre rule is used for longer objects.

Example

A pencil may measure:

15 cm

A classroom door may measure about:

2 m
