C: PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

The pupils have learnt multiplication as repeated addition and can multiply small numbers by 2 and 3.

D: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Multiply numbers by 2.
  2. Multiply numbers by 3.
  3. Multiply simple two-digit numbers by 2.
  4. Multiply simple two-digit numbers by 3.
  5. Solve simple multiplication word problems.

E: CONTENT

Multiplying by 2

To multiply by 2 means to add a number to itself.
Example:

12 × 2

12 + 12 = 24

So:

12 × 2 = 24

Another example:

21 × 2 = 42

Multiplying by 3

To multiply by 3 means to add the same number three times.
Example:

11 × 3

11 + 11 + 11 = 33

So:

11 × 3 = 33

More Examples

  • 13 × 2 = 26
  • 22 × 2 = 44
  • 12 × 3 = 36
  • 20 × 3 = 60

Simple Word Problem

There are 2 bags with 15 oranges in each bag.
How many oranges are there?

15 × 2 = 30

There are 30 oranges.

  1. Revises multiplication by repeated addition.
  2. Revises the 2 times table.
  3. Revises the 3 times table.
  4. Demonstrates multiplying two-digit numbers by 2 and 3.
